Concrete in Historic New Carlisle
New Carlisle is a town in Olive Township, St. Joseph County, and the concrete contractors who work here deal with homes that range from the 1800s to today. Richard Risley Carlisle, who came from Philadelphia, platted the town in 1835. Before that the land was called Bourissa Hills. The 2020 census counted 1,891 residents and 839 housing units on about 2.23 square miles.
The historic district
The New Carlisle Historic District and the Jeremiah Service House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The post office has run since 1837, and the South Shore Line kept a New Carlisle stop until 1994. Old houses in the district often have:
- Brick or old concrete walks that have sunk or broken up
- Front steps much steeper than modern steps
- Narrow side driveways with patched sections
- Back stoops sitting on loose soil
When we rebuild steps on an older house, we try to keep them in proportion with the porch while making the rise and run safer and more even. For walks, a plain broom finish suits most older homes. A stamped walk with a brick or stone pattern can also fit the look of the street.
A town with big industry next door
New Carlisle is home to the Indiana Enterprise Center, a very large industrial park, and Wikipedia notes that an Amazon data center there was the company's largest as of 2025. The Honeysuckle solar station, rated at 188 MWdc, entered service in 2024. Whatever the traffic on your road, homes on busier streets benefit from a solid, well-built driveway apron that can handle the turn in and out without crumbling at the edge.
Driveways that last
A New Carlisle driveway goes through deep freezes, snow and plows every winter. The parts of the job you cannot see matter most:
Subgrade. We remove topsoil and soft material and compact what is left.
Base. A compacted gravel layer drains water and spreads the load.
Mix. Air-entrained concrete resists freeze-thaw scaling.
Joints. Control joints on a planned layout keep cracks in straight lines.
Cure. The slab is kept from drying too fast so the surface reaches full strength.
Farmland and a growing industrial park
The Indiana Enterprise Center was the subject of a 2020 documentary titled Prime Farmland, and the Honeysuckle solar project covers about a thousand acres. Land use around New Carlisle has shifted fast. For homeowners on the edge of town, that often means a longer drive out to the road, more truck traffic at the end of it and a reason to build the apron and the first stretch of driveway heavier than the rest.
Fixing just the bad parts
If only part of your driveway or walk has failed, we can saw-cut along the existing joints, remove the broken sections and pour new ones. The color will not match old concrete perfectly at first, but the repair is solid and costs less than a full replacement.
Patios and slabs
We pour back patios, plain or stamped, and slabs for detached garages and sheds. Many lots in town have room at the back for a garage or workshop. A garage slab gets a thickened edge for the walls, anchor bolts placed while the concrete is wet and a slight pitch toward the door so melting snow from your car drains out.
New Carlisle had a homeowner vacancy rate of just 0.9 percent at the 2020 census, which means homes here sell and stay occupied. Good concrete is one of the first things buyers notice from the curb.

New Carlisle Questions
Can you match new steps to an old porch in New Carlisle?
Yes. We size the steps to fit the porch while keeping the rise even and the treads deep enough to be safe.
Is stamped concrete a good fit for a historic home?
It can be. A brick or stone pattern in a muted color often suits older homes better than a bright, busy pattern.
My driveway apron crumbles at the road. Why?
Edges take the most stress from turning tires and plows. A thicker edge on a good base holds up much better.
